Mastering the DMP Tenant Registration Process Digitally
Why Police Verification Matters
The DMP tenant registration requirement exists for security reasons: to maintain a database of who lives where, enabling police to trace persons of interest and respond to tenant-related security incidents.
From a landlord's perspective, the benefits go beyond legal compliance:
- Verified identity. The process confirms the tenant's NID, address history, and lack of outstanding warrants
- Legal protection. If a tenant commits a crime on or near your property, your completion of the verification process demonstrates good faith
- Faster dispute resolution. Verified tenants are easier to locate if they abscond without paying rent
The Online DMP Tenant Registration Process
DMP has digitized the tenant registration process through its Police Clearance and Tenant Registration portal. Here is the step-by-step:
Step 1: Gather Required Documents
Before logging in, have the following ready (scanned or photographed):
| Document | Who Provides It |
|---|---|
| National ID (NID) of tenant | Tenant |
| Passport photo of tenant | Tenant |
| NID of all adult family members moving in | Tenant |
| Copy of signed rental agreement | Landlord |
| NID of building owner | Landlord |
| Trade license (if commercial) | Landlord |
Step 2: Access the Portal
Visit the DMP citizen services portal. Select "Tenant Registration" (ভাড়াটিয়া নিবন্ধন). You will need your own NID number to create an account or log in.
Step 3: Complete the Registration Form
The online form asks for:
- Building address and ward number
- Tenant's personal details (as per NID)
- Rental agreement date and duration
- Number of occupants
- Tenant's previous address (where they lived before)
Take your time completing this accurately — errors result in rejection and the need to resubmit.
Step 4: Upload Documents
Upload the scanned/photographed documents. File size should be under 2MB each. JPG or PDF formats are accepted.
Step 5: Submit and Track
After submission, you receive a tracking number. DMP processes the registration within 3–7 working days. You will receive an SMS when complete.
Handling the Process for Multiple Units
If you have a multi-unit building with regular tenant turnover, create a standard document checklist that you give to every new tenant on signing day. Request the documents before the tenant moves in — not after. This eliminates the scramble to collect paperwork after move-in.
Bari Shamlai's tenant onboarding flow includes a document checklist that you can customise for DMP compliance requirements.
What Happens If You Miss the 15-Day Window
If you miss the deadline:
1. Complete the registration immediately (late is better than never)
2. Note the reason for the delay in your records
3. If you have received a formal police notice, respond promptly in writing with proof that you have now submitted
Most wards do not proactively fine for first-time late submissions — they follow up with notices. Fines are more commonly issued for persistent non-compliance or following a security incident involving a tenant.
